Well I certainly hope 2009 is a better year than 2008!

There's an old superstition: What you are doing at the stroke of midnight on New Year's is what you'll be doing all year.

Me, I was alone... in bed.

Good thing I'm not superstitious!

Israeli human rights organization B'Tselem is questioning Israel's widely-distributed video of "Hamas fighters loading rockets on a truck," which Israel subsequently bombed on Monday. B'Tselem claims it tracked down the truck, and the surviving men... and says they were loading welding equipment, and the "rockets" were actually gas canisters.

Al-Jazeera has aired a report:

I don't actually know who is telling the truth... but right now, I'm not very inclined to believe Israel's account of what happened.
Because WTA isn't running today, I asked my friend [ profile] seespikerun to drive me to the ATM, and then to Haggen to get some groceries and smokes (I got my January disability disbursement from DSHS today -- time to pay rent!). I went to the WECU ATM on campus, because it disburses $5 bills. One of the bills was another Where's George bill:

Cool! I gave it to Alex to pay him back for the $5 I borrowed from him to buy cigarettes last week.

Where will it go next?
I just penned a letter to each of my senators and representatives in Washington, D.C. (Sen. Maria Cantwell, Sen. Patty Murray, and Rep. Rick Larsen):

ENOUGH! Israel's recent behaviour in Gaza is completely unacceptable, and must not be allowed to continue unchallenged. This is not self-defence, it's retribution, and a war crime. I urge you to work to stop Israeli state-sponsored violence against Palestine, and furthermore, to cut off the flow of U.S. military aid and taxpayer money to Israel. I do not want my tax dollars going to fund Israel's oppression of Palestine any more.

I look forward to your reply.

It may be futile, but it's important for these people to know that their constituents are objecting to what's happening in Gaza (on our dime). Never let it be said that I did nothing to stop the bloodshed.

I urge my friends who feel as I do to write their elected representatives in Washington. You can get their addresses at by entering your zip code.
My artist, graphic designer and Free Culture aficionado friends should appreciate this:
Medium-res images of the world (sans Antarctica) have been released for free under a Creative Commons license by Unearthed Outdoors:
This is really cool stuff, here. HUGE images! Their largest resolution free version is 250m per pixel, which is large enough to see Bellingham, but not enough to see my apartment building. (I downloaded the largest version, and nearly crashed my computer trying to play with it.) I've uploaded the smallest version to my Flickr acount, so others can use it. The images are a composite collected by the Landsat 7 satellite between 1999 and 2002.
