I just saw a hummingbird!

I just now saw a hummingbird pass by, hovering briefly over the tops of the trees and bushes outside my porch!

It's the first one I've seen this year. I'm pretty sure it was a selasphorus rufus, which has one of the largest migrations of all the hummingbirds. They migrate from Guerrero, México to as far north as Southeast Alaska to breed and dine on wildflowers.

It looked kind of like this:

Wow. I felt like I just had a visit from a fellow long-traveller!

I think I need to get a feeder.

get a feeder!

This year I upgraded to a large glass feeder. Besides humming birds I had several Baltimore orioles. I had never seen one, just pictures. It is fun to watch the "hummers" as My dad called them. The are mean little bastards. I read that in Readers Digest. I saw one stand of against a yellow jacket. The jacket was feeding and the hummer came up. The jacket turned around and they faced off. The hummer made a move toward the jacket. The jacket leaned back. They stayed that way for a while. Finally the hummer moved to another hole. I read Hummer will attack big birds. Their beaks are like lances! I saw one drink then fly to a tree branch and clean his beak by wiping it on a branch.

Make your own food using 4 cups of water to one cup of sugar. Boil for one minute. Cool. Use. No color needed. Change every couple of days.

Hummingbirds are cool, and I envy that you guys get to see Rufous hummers out there in the PNW. Here, the rubythroateds are still going gangbusters at our feeders.
