So the temperature finally rose above freezing, and the falling snow turned to rain. Which is good for washing away much of the accumulated snow, but turns everything into a sloppy, slushy mess -- and when it freezes again tonight, it will be dangerous. But for now the streets are clear, and it's warmer, so I decided to brave the slush in order to run some errands. It's the first time I've been out of the apartment for days.

See, THIS is why I don't want to leave Bellingham to look for work down south:

After I put it out there that I had no Thanksgiving plans, and was feeling alone, my neighbour Yoshe came over and asked if I wanted to ride with him to the free community Thanksgiving Dinner at the Old Town Cafe. I had planned to go to that initially, but after I sprained my ankle, I knew I couldn't walk there, and the WTA is not running busses today.

So I showered and put on my best suit (because if there's any occasion for me to dress up, it's Thanksgiving Dinner). I only could wear one shoe, though, because my right foot is swelled up, and there's bruising on the ankle. Definitely sprained.

Dinner was nice, all the traditional thanksgiving fixings, shared freely with Bellingham's poor, needy and homeless. (Saw some beautiful, rough, hairy men there, too. [livejournal.com profile] snousle would have liked the scenery.)

Yoshe and I talked about what we were thankful for. I am thankful for him getting me out of the house, when I was worried about being all alone. I'm thankful for my LJ friends who helped keep me from getting evicted. I am thankful for the local food bank. And I am also thankful that Bellingham has such giving people.

Afterwards, as I was walking back to Yoshe's car, a man came up to me and asked why I was limping, and only wearing 1 shoe. I explained that I had sprained my ankle yesterday, and he said, "Then you need a cane!"

And handed me one. Right then and there on the street. An adjustable medical cane that was tall enough for me to use.

Well how about that!

Happy Thanksgiving, Bellingham! And thank you!
