So, yesterday, [livejournal.com profile] rosetta_torture wrote in her journal that she was considering going to Miller-Motte Technical College, to study cosmetology. I applaud her for this, because it's never too late to go back to school.

Curious about the school, I went to Wikipedia to read up on it, and uh-oh... a redlink! (That means no Wikipedia article has been written yet).

Damn. Redlink.

OK, time to go to work. You see, I have a personal rule when using Wikipedia: If I try to look up a subject, and the article doesn't exist yet, then it is up to me to start the article. Simple as that. I have good research skills, I write well, and I understand Wikipedia style, so it makes sense. And I certainly have the time right now...

So, I went to the Miller-Motte website, read up on the school, and then created this article:

Miller-Motte Technical College

Fortunately, I have to do this less and less these days, as more and more of Wikipedia's blanks get filled in. But every so often...

Here's the list of Wikipedia articles I've written, or at least started.

I can has cookie now? Or even job?

With [livejournal.com profile] seespikerun as an inspiration, I discovered that Wikipedia didn't have an article about "hit for hit," that ritual combat game that some aggressive young guys play. Surprised me, because I think it's fairly universal, isn't it? So anyway, I started an article, but I've not had a lot of luck finding citations on the web. I need to check the academic literature. Any suggestions?
I'm back!

After spending days being hobbled by a sweet-tea-soaked-dead keyboard (*bzzzzt*), being forced to use the mouse and a virtual keyboard to type (*AAAAAAGH*), and totally unable to work on Wikipedia articles... [livejournal.com profile] teledildonix came to my rescue! He had an older-model (but still compatible) Mac keyboard lying around, and he gave it to me. Thank you so much, Kevin. Once again, you've pulled my fat ass out of the fire!

Today was a busy, busy day. I slept in, then ate a leisurely breakfast of Corn Flakes and Mountain Dew, and did almost nothing until noon.

Then, I showered, dressed, and started my day. ;-)

Caught the bus to the University, and paid my remaining fees (to keep the road to graduation in August clear), went to the bus station, bought a July bus pass, went to WorkSource downtown to meed with my DVR counselor. Turned out to be a really good meeting: we talked about how I should broach the subject of my disability with future employers (her advice: not until after they've given you a firm job offer in writing), what my plans are (short term: find a part-time job, long-term, find a permanent job), should I cut my hair & beard (no, but I do need a trim), how I can include my Wikipedia editing experience for any job I apply for, etc. I've also agreed to start going to job club every Monday morning, to network. Then she asked me what DVR could do for me, and here's what we came up with: DVR will pay for my graduation expenses (cap and gown rental). DVR will pay for a brand new outfit (shirt, slacks, shoes) for me to wear to interviews. And DVR will pay my bus pass all summer! Cool deal, no?

Afterwards, I went to Kevin's place to get the keyboard, then to get some groceries, including a $16 salad (don't ask), and now I'm home!

Now I just gotta get caught up on my emails and LJ comments...
Supernova remnant G1.9+0.3I've just put the finishing touches on my latest Wikipedia contribution: Supernova remnant G1.9+0.3.

NASA held a press conference today to announce the discovery of this object, the remains of a supernova that exploded about 140 years ago (relative to Earth time -- it actually exploded about 25,000 years ago, and the radio waves are just reaching us now). It's the youngest supernova we have yet found, which is very exciting to scientists, because most observed supernovae explosions in human history took place before the invention of radio and X-ray astronomy. The last supernova in the Milky Way Galaxy that could actually be observed visually from Earth took place in 1604.

I listened in to the press conference over the web, and when I saw that there was only a stub about the press conference on Wikipedia, with no details, I decided to write an article, citing sources and gathering pictures.

I am such a geek! ;-) But astronomy was always my first passion in life, I can think of no higher calling than to contribute to the greater sum of freely-available human knowledge!

Here's the complete list of everything I've written (or significantly contributed to) on Wikipedia.
