I was rather surprised to read this article this morning on BoingBoing:

Lakota Natives Withdraw Treaties with U.S.
"The Lakota Indians, who gave the world legendary warriors Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, have withdrawn from treaties with the United States, leaders said Wednesday. Lakota country includes parts of the states of Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana and Wyoming.
The new country would issue its own passports and driving licenses, and living there would be tax-free -- provided residents renounce their US citizenship."

(More on this story from Agence France-Presse)

Those who know me well know that I have been predicting for decades that the United States could break up into smaller nations, if social and economic pressures were great enough. It happened to the Soviet Union, which militarily spent itself into oblivion (as the U.S. is doing now), and it almost happened to Canada, when Québec barely voted not to secede.

It can happen here, as well.

There are a number of active secessionist movements in the U.S., including movements in Hawai'i, Alaska, Cascadia, and some towns that border with Canada. In my mind, the U.S. Civil War didn't end the question of secession, but merely postponed it for a few generations. The borders of the U.S. are not inviolate, contrary to our national mythology. If the world changes, and it makes sense for some regions to become independent of the United States, I believe it will happen.

It will be interesting to see how this Lakota movement plays out.

I only hope this doesn't end in bloodshed for the Lakota.
