DOGME 95, continued...

Dogme 95 drew upon the Oulipo movement in literature in the 1960s, where arbitrary constraining rules are placed on written works. Dogme 95 shares this format in placing arbitrary limits on creativity.

Class discussion of the Dogme 95 film we watched yesterday: "Festen" ("The Celebration," Denmark 1998)

Synopsis (from Wikipedia):
The Celebration is an acclaimed 1998 Danish film, written and directed by Thomas Vinterberg and produced by Nimbus Film. Its original Danish title is Festen, and it was released under this title in the UK. The film tells the story of a family gathering to celebrate their father's 60th birthday. At the birthday dinner, his eldest son publicly accuses him of sexually abusing and raping both him and his twin sister (who had just recently committed suicide).

Narrative structure of the film:
- The film style is like a "kamikaze documentary," with improvisation and frenetic camera moves.
- The Chaotic camera work, counterpoints with the more structured plot and characterization.
- The story itself -- a dysfunctional family gathering, where dark secrets are revealed -- is a stock plot. There is also a "prodigal son" motif in play, as well as working as a thriller.
- The film follows a traditional 3-act structure.
