So, 14-time Olympic Gold Medalist Michael Phelps was photographed smoking out of a Bong.

SO FUCKING WHAT?!?!?!?!

But what's worse is Phelps' statement, when he admitted smoking marijuana:

I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment. I'm 23 years old and despite the successes I've had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again.

Geez, Michael, the only "regrettable" behaviour was your apology. Now you're a hypocrite, too -- because I don't believe for a minute that you'll never smoke pot again.

The CORRECT response is, "Yes, I was smoking it, and it's nobody's business but my own." Period.

Sure, you'd probably lose some endorsements, but I guarantee you'd gain lots of others -- and a lot of respect.

I hope, with age and maturity, you will come to see your apology was the only "youthful and inappropriate" thing you did.

Sheesh!

Sadly, a positive drug test or an arrest would earn him a 4-year ban, meaning he would have to miss the 2012 Olympics. Stupid? Yes, but those are the current rules. If he didn't apologize, the US Olympic team could just suspend him anyway (and still could).

But he had neither a positive drug test, nor an arrest.

This is just so stupid anyway, because it's not a performance-enhancing drug. It's the Canadian Olympic Snowboarding Team all over again.
