The class ring is back.
FKHS Class of 1986. Go Eagles!
I lost this ring 20 years ago, in Kansas, in another life.
Thank you to my new friend
clattea, who works at Fort Knox High School, who so dilligently looked for me and found me through LiveJournal; and Linda in Barnes, Kansas, who was so kind to mail it back to me.
Ahhhhhh. My Precioussssssssss......
Note the classy and downkey blue-and-silver colour combination. Not too ornate, simple. The blue of the stone matches my eyes. The chunky cut of the aquamarine and rectangular setting suggest masculinity. It's a manly-man's ring!
It's a little tight. I think I may have increased my ring size since I first got it. I grew another two inches in height in the five years AFTER I got the ring, so that's to be expected.
Spin it around, and you'll see "Computer Science" emblazoned on the side. That ambition lasted until about, oh, 2 months into my Freshman semester at Bellarmine.
I just had a deja vu moment polishing it on my jeans.
Funny, this trinket coming back to me now, just when I am finally graduating from college.
The Universe is indeed unfolding.

Dear Kevyn,
Thought I'd get your class ring in the mail this morning. I asked my husband where they had found your ring. He said that one of his guys was pulling out some cedar trees up on a ridge at University Park and found it there. Kind of a place where people parked to hang out and talk or whatever. I'm not sure how he saw the ring but it is kind of neat that he did. Otherwise it could have been covered up for another twenty years or so. They were putting in a basement nearby. My husband wasn't sure if your dad's place was around there or not.
I'm glad that the woman I contacted at Fort Knox High School was kind enough to keep looking for you. I know that it is only a high school ring; but still it is yours and wasn't doing anything for anyone just setting on the desk in our office We come from such a small high school (Linn High) that the school secretary would probably have known right away how to get in touch with you. There were only 28 kids in the senior class that graduated in May and that was considered a big class.
I looked you up on Live Journal and see that you have been struggling with health issues. I hope you are on the road to recovery. I wasn't trying to be nosy; just curious I guess. Maybe getting your ring back means that you are in for some good luck. I'm hoping so. Congratulations on your upcoming graduation. I've also included some. money in with the ring. I know it isn't much; but sometimes every little bit helps. After reading your Journal (I hope that was okay) I decided that this was a way for me to 'pay it forward'. There have been people in our lives who have helped out when we needed a little boost and wanted to pass that along.
Well, I better get going. Have a big day today; but wanted to get your ring on its way. You take care and enjoy your ring. Glad I could get it back to you.
Sincerely,
Linda Weaver

Funny that, eh?
When I got this ring at high school graduation in 1986, it was arguably the most important watershed moment in my life. I finally was detaching from my mother, coming to grips with being gay, falling in love for the first time with my first "daddy figure," going to college, learning how to interact socially, learning how to use my body, rebelling against the Catholic strictures I had grown up under, and ultimately becoming my own person.
It's also when I started smoking, drinking, and carousing.
And now, at this watershed moment, when I am finally graduating from university, and possibly moving to Canada in the near future, it's come back. I've been wearing it today, and it serves as a constant reminder for me of who I was back then, and how much I have changed.
I've thought, how would the Kevin of 1986 have reacted to the Kevyn of 2008?
No doubt, I'd like me. After I got over the shock of still being alive at age 40, the unapologetic homosexuality, and the shameful (to me then) secret of not believing in god, I'd see someone that was fairly confident, powerful, and valuable in the world!
