Tonight, I had the pleasure of meeting Armistead Maupin. Again.

Maupin is touring the U.S. and the U.K. on a tour to promote his latest "Tales of the City" book, "Michael Tolliver Lives," and the third stop on the tour happened to be here in Bellingham! So Rick, Peter, and I went to see him and get books signed.

My friends Rick Ruben (left) and Peter Rolstad (in kilt) listen to Maupin speak.

Rick gets a book signed.

This is actually the second time I've met Maupin. The first time was in 1993, in New York City, at Stonewall 25. I met him on the parade route and we chatted briefly about how popular the Tales of the City books were in Kansas public libraries (where I worked at the time).

Maupin started by reading an excerpt from the new book, then took questions from the audience. Afterwards, he chatted with fans while signing books. What a charming, funny man!

Armistead Maupin started his book tour here in San Francisco, no surprisingly. Unfortunately, I had to work and be in class during both appearances, so I've still never seen him in person.

The new book is great. It isn't perfect. There are parts I would have changed and I'm not sure I would have written this latest one from Michael's perspective, but it was nice to catch up with all these characters after nearly two decades.

I'll never see the urinal at the Lone Star the same. It was nice to see a Tales of the City in a world of bears... as well as a Generation X'er that isn't the annoying little girl in the "Heidi dress."

I haven't read it yet... but I'm eagerly looking forward to it!
