As part of my crash course in geography, I've been studying The States of México. In doing so, I came upon something amusing:

One of the states in Central México is called "Hidalgo." It's a Spanish word meaning "nobleman." What's funny is the etymology of the word. Hidalgo is a contraction of a rather sarcastic phrase: "hijo de algo," which means "son of something."

Hee hee hee. Someone wasn't too impressed with the Spanish aristocracy back in the middle ages. ;-)
