Here's the email I just sent to my advisers at WWU & DVR:

OK, winter quarter is about to begin tomorrow. I am ready to tackle this education thing again - one last time!

I am currently registered for 2 classes:

ENG 351 - INTRODUCTION TO FICTION WRITING -- CRN 14553 -- Instructor: Nicholas B. Dybek
5 cr. -- TR 12:00 pm - 1:50 pm -- College Hall 137

JOUR 340 - HISTORY OF MASS MEDIA -- CRN 13652 -- Instructor: Bradley P. Howard
3 cr. -- MW 8:30 am - 9:45 am -- Old Main 482

I'm still trying to get in to this grant writing class:

ENG 462 - PROFESSIONAL WRITING: GRANT WRITING -- 13829 -- Instructor: Nicole Brown
5 cr. -- TR 10:00 am-11:50 am -- Humanities Bldg. 105

Because this class is only offered once a year, I feel it's vital for me to get into it. I've contacted the instructor, asked to be put on the waiting list, and plan on showing up for the class tomorrow morning (even though I'm not yet registered).

If I do get in, I've been thinking that I will take 3 classes (full-time, 13 credits) this quarter. I know this isn't what I had planned for (I said 3/4ths time earlier on), but I am anxious to graduate ASAP, and I am confident in my ability to make it through the quarter this time.

And frankly, I'm motivated, because I want to get this OVER, and get the damn piece of paper! 21 years is long enough.

My current student status is "Probation," but I forsee me getting off that status this quarter, and applying for graduation at the beginning of spring.

Because of the extra class, I decided to accept the full award financial aid offered me (Winter & Spring quarters):

* Direct Loan 1 - Sub Accepted $ 1,328.00
* Direct Loan 1-Unsub Accepted $ 7,990.00
* Western Grant Accepted $ 150.00
* Tuition Waiver Accepted $ 1,000.00
Total $10,468.00

I realize this may jeopardize my ability to get aid from DVR. If so, so be it -- I didn't want to take the loans, but I *really* want to get through this, and graduate at the end of Spring Quarter. Taking the extra class and aid will let me do that.

Since I am also probably going to lose my food stamps and cash assistance from DSHS (because I am a student who isn't working part-time), I am signing up for a 10-meal a week plan at the dining halls. I'm more likely to eat balanced, regular meals when the stressor of obtaining & preparing food is taken off of me. This is also a motivation for taking the loans.

According to the Web4U website, this amount has been awarded to me, but I haven't received it yet -- I'll be stopping in at Old Main today to check and see if there is anything else I need to do -- sign promissary notes, I imagine.

Books will have to wait until that award is made. Catherine, can DVR help with books & supplies?

On the mental health front, the antidepressant meds are doing ok, I'm using the light box regularly, and getting out of my apartment to exercise and socialize, and walking to class 4 days a week will also benefit me.

I have a well-developed support network now, and am even setting up a study schedule with a friend as a regular study partner (who is a real taskmaster - exactly what I need!)

I have also made an appointment to see my Psychiatrist at the WWU health center, Dr. Sara Cuene, and plan on staying in close contact with her (as well a David Brunnemer and Catherine Herring) as the quarter progresses.

So, here we go! I'm scared, but also excited, because I am *so close* to graduation!

Thank you!

How's your classes doing?

I got a card from Zach this week. He wants to know how I got his address (hee hee hee).

Sorry I've been so busy the past week. I've been up to my eyeballs in busywork, and my car was inoperative until today.

I'd still like to take you and George up on the imbibing offer...!

the classes are...pleasantly surprising.
i'm picking things back up really smoothly (though, my brain feels like electrified jell-o at the end of my longer days).

i feel really bad =[
in the middle of all the holiday gunk, i forgot to mail off zach's card, and now i'm not sure where it is.
is he still in the same place?

i read about your car.
is it better now??

and the offer is always open =D

in fact...heee:
the place where we ordered our Lucid from sent us another by mistake.
i was going to call them, but george talked some sense into me.
what would i do without him? =D

>the classes are...pleasantly surprising.

Is that as opposed to "surprisingly pleasant?" *grin*

This is the address he put on the envelope:
Schacht, E. Zachariah
DIV Ø64 Ship 1Ø
R.D.C.
3245 Sailor Dr.
Great Lakes, IL
6ØØ88-3525

You should drop him a Christmas card. I think he'd find that amusing, at this late date! ;-)

Well, I finally got the tire replaced, but the dents still need to be fixed. Bleah...

Score on the second bottle of Lucid!
What's your schedule looking like?

i was just talking to george about it, and if you're free this weekend, it would be great for us.
he won't drink on weeknights during the company's busy season, but our weekend is free - and we could definitely keep it that way.

and thank you for the address!
i'll send him a "hey, i just thought i'd extend your christmas season well into the next year!" card. =D

Let me see what my bf has planned this weekend.

Would you guys object if I brought him along, if he's interested?

not at all!
i'm so happy for you!

*SQUEE!*

(i promise if you do bring him along, i'll keep any and all squeeing to an absolute minimum =})

FWIW, grant writing in science is definitely a growth industry. John actually retired in part because the funding system has made the process of applying for grants so burdensome. Other fields may be in a similar situation, with older professionals getting fed up with it and very likely looking for outside help because they aren't very good at doing it themselves!

It's terribly tedious when it distracts you from your "real" work, but as a specialty it may be quite lucrative.

Good luck with it!

Thanks for the heads up. I'm really good at translating geek-to-english, so science grant writing may actually be a good area for me to explore!
