Is anyone else as weirded out by this as I am?

This doesn't feel like an accident. This feels like information warfare, or perhaps PsyOps. The timing and geographical location of these cuts seems more than a little coincidental.

According to the Internet Traffic Report, Iran is being hardest hit by this disruption.

I am really *really* suspicious about what's going on here. And despite what a lot of people are saying (tongue-in-cheek) on BoingBoing, I really don't think it's Godzilla.

A fifth cable may have been cut now, BoingBoing reports.

I suppose it could just be random coincidence, but I am really beginning to wonder if someone isn't trying to cut off the Middle East from the rest of the world. Something like 90% of all internet/voice traffic to the region goes through undersea cables.

To paraphrase The Phantom Menace, "A communications disruption can mean only one thing: invasion."

Here's hoping I'm just being paranoid.

Learned from Penn & Teller: When the magician wants you to look 'over here', look everywhere but there. What's happening in Washington this week in communications? Does some US company want a contract to replace ageing cables? Multinationals are more powerful than most governments now, anyway.

The "cut so they don't notice we're attaching links to data mining facilities" seems to be the most likely option to me.
